Protest – artist statement
“Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will.” –Frederick Douglass
Okay, I confess. I’m against war. Even the next one. And sometimes I walk the line.
I have been a labor organizer, working for more than twenty years for three labor unions, and I have participated in the women’s movement, anti-war protests, the farmworkers struggle, the American Indian movement, and in local community actions.
I have also photographed demonstrations for many years. This portfolio represents a sampling of my anti-Iraq war, Burma freedom, Arab Spring, Occupy, Black Lives Matter, labor movement, and Women’s March photographs.
What makes our country great is our right to protest wrongs and to organize for a better tomorrow.
